Once you download SmartFTP, run the installer. Do the same with the media player you downloaded. Audacity is just a little more involved to install so I’ll walk through the process below.
If you already have Audacity installed, you can skip ahead to the Audacity Tutorial.
You can download Audacity here. Audacity is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. This tutorial is done in Windows, but everything should be similar even if you’re on a Mac or Linux.
This is the Audacity download page:
If you click on the Windows link, you will go to this screen:
Click on the installer link at the top of the page (Note: the version number may be higher when you download). The next screen will contain a list of several locations that you can download from.
Choose a location that is closest to you and click on the icon to the right to save the installer file to your computer. Remember where you save the file on your hard drive.
Now find the installer file that you just downloaded and double-click on it to start the installation and follow the instructions which are straight forward.
Download LAME MP3 Encoder
Now click here to go to the LAME MP3 Encoder download page.
Click on the link for your operating system to download this software that works with Audacity to create your MP3 files.
The next page has another list of links where you can download from. Roll the dice, close your eyes and point or whatever and pick a link. Click on it and you will download a zip file (a compressed file) containing the LAME encoder.
Note: If you don’t have a program to unzip the file, I suggest the free CoffeeCup Zip Wizard that can be downloaded here.
Unzip the file. This will create a folder that I rename to be just LAME. Then move it to a folder such as "C:/Program Files/" or wherever you would like to keep it. This program does not need to be installed. Just remember where you put it so you can connect it to Audacity later.
Open Audacity and Get Ready to Roll
Open Audacity. If you’re using Windows, go to Start>All Programs>Audacity.
Now that we’ve downloaded and installed Audacity, let’s take a look at how to set it up and start recording.
